Session II:   MAYORAL PERSPECTIVES

February 21, 2007 (7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.)

 Breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

Program starts promptly at 7:45 a.m.

Mayor Kay Barnes, second term mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, and former Mayor Carol Marinovich, past mayor and CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas and current senior vice president of Fleishman-Hillard will share their perspectives on the mutually beneficial relationship between city governments and the nonprofit community.  From the vantage point of their own successful bi-state collaboration, these two leaders will discuss ways in which nonprofit organizations can also work together successfully to enhance regional cooperation.  In addition, both mayors will share their visions for the future of our Kansas City metropolitan area.

Carol Marinovich began her career as an educator and administrator in the Kansas City, Kansas School District.  In 1989, she was elected to the City Council for Kansas City, Kansas, and six years later, she became mayor.  During her tenure in public service, Mayor Marinovich helped to consolidate the governments of Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County and led impressive economic development and urban revitalization efforts.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College and a master’s degree from the University of Kansas.

Mayor Barnes’ early experiences include working for the Cross-Lines Cooperative Council and helping to found the UMKC Women’s Resource Service.  For twenty-three years, she was president of Kay Waldo, Inc., a human resources development firm for which she conducted public seminars on topics including leadership development and team building. Before becoming the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri in 1999, Mayor Barnes had been a member of both the Jackson County Legislature and the Kansas City Missouri City Council.  As mayor, Kay Barnes has spearheaded the redevelopment of the downtown and has focused on basic urban service delivery.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and masters degrees in secondary education and public administration from UMKC.
