Conference Purpose & Design

This first ever Missouri Statewide Conference for Nonprofit Organizations will have an interactive, participatory format which will provide lots of opportunities for dialogue, sharing proven and promising practices and networking. The purpose of the conference is:

  • to bring Missouri nonprofit and philanthropic organizations from across the entire nonprofit sector together, to build our identity and strengthen our voice

  • to examine state-level public policy issues which affect the sector

  • to help nonprofit organizations understand and effectively engage in the public policy arena, particularly at the state level

  • to explore the level of interest in establishing a Missouri association of nonprofit organizations.

Featured Speakers

Diana Aviv is the president and CEO of Independent Sector, the national leadership forum for charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs committed to advancing the common good in America and around the world. A nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of approximately 575 organizations that collectively represents tens of thousands of charitable groups across the country, Independent Sector leads, strengthens, and mobilizes the charitable community in order to fulfill our vision of a just and inclusive society of active citizens, vibrant communities, effective institutions, and a healthy democracy. A noted expert on the major issues affecting the national nonprofit and philanthropic community, Diana is a frequent speaker on the accountability and transparency of nonprofit organizations, the financial state of the nonprofit sector, the role of civil society in democracy, and civic engagement. She has testified before Congress and has been quoted in print, broadcast, and online media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio.

Diana also serves as executive director of the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, an independent panel of charitable and philanthropic leaders convened by Independent Sector in October 2004 at the encouragement of the leadership of the Senate Finance Committee.

Dennis R. Young, Ph.D., Professor of Public Administration and Urban Studies at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, is a widely respected authority in the nonprofit sector.  Dr. Young helped establish the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western. He is also president and founding CEO of the National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise based in Arlington, Virginia. He was also a former President of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) where he recently received a lifetime Award for Distinguished Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research. MNA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting an effective nonprofit sector by acting as a convener of organizations key to the nonprofit community; encouraging voluntary giving and service; and taking an active role in nonprofit public policy.

Prior to accepting this position, Mr. Singh served as director of the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), a state association of volunteer centers dedicated to mobilizing people and resources to deliver creative solutions to community problems.

He previously worked with the Points of Light Foundation and the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) as a Youth Consultant. During his tenure, he assisted in establishing President Clinton's national service program, AmeriCorps, in Michigan; guided the development of the Governor's statewide recognition program for volunteerism; and advised the Michigan Youth Progressive Action Council, a national model for youth empowerment.

Mr. Singh is a graduate of Michigan State University (MSU). Mr. Singh was re-elected to the East Lansing City Council in November 2003 and currently serves as the Mayor for the city.
