MBA Degree Requirements (old program)

The information below applies to our old MBA program. That program is not available to students admitted after January, 2012. This webpage will be maintained as a reference for students in the old program.

The MBA program at UMKC ranges up to 48 credit hours. The curriculum is comprised of two distinct stages: core classes and classes taken beyond the core. There are no prerequisites for our MBA program. Rather, the total number of hours required for the MBA depends upon the focus of your undergraduate coursework. Students with an undergraduate degree in a business-related field will have an MBA around 30-39 credit hours, while students with undergraduate degrees in other fields will have close to a 48-hour MBA.

Core courses (24 credit hours)

Previous college coursework in business is not required; however, you must have completed college algebra and possess skills equivalent to MIS 202: Computer Applications in Business, before taking more advanced quantitative coursework in the program. Core courses may be waived after admission by an academic advisor.

Beyond core requirements:

These courses consist of MGT 5537, Competitive Strategies; the 12 credit hours for your selected emphasis; and 9-15 hours of electives. The number of electives is determined by how many core classes you’ve had waived from your program. (Waivers are determined by an academic advisor after you’ve been admitted to the Bloch MBA.)

Emphasis Areas:

To focus your education and develop your expertise in specific areas for your career, the Bloch School offers the following eight emphasis areas (all are 12 credit hours):

Please note that only 12 credit hours (four courses) from any one emphasis area can be counted toward your degree program.

Transfer credit

A maximum of six (6) credit hours of graduate coursework completed with distinction at an accredited graduate school and relevant to the individual’s degree program may be accepted toward the MBA. You must provide official transcripts to UMKC for this purpose. All transfer credit is approved by your advisor during your first semester.
