Today’s global economy demands a broad understanding of the ways in which businesses are impacted by economic, social, political and cultural factors. Bloch Executive MBA students participate in four residencies during the program to gain the skills necessary to lead in dynamic times. Each academic year begins with a one-week live-in residency. In addition, students participate in a Washington, D.C. residency and an international residency.
Year One Residencies
Leadership Week Residency
During the initial Leadership Week residency, students are immersed in strategic decision making through the use of a series of case analyses that track an organization through two decades of its history and sustainable growth challenges. This initial residency is also a critical time for the development of team building and facilitation skills. Students stay at a hotel on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.
Washington, DC Residency
The four-day Washington, DC residency provides intensive, firsthand exposure to the forces that shape America's business policy. In off-the-record sessions with top policy makers, Bloch Executive MBA students learn how to understand and anticipate the impact of public policy on their organizations and how to be more effective participants in the national decision-making process. This residency also focuses on the role of social leadership in the development of business policies, practices and processes.
Year Two Residencies
Innovation Week Residency
To kick off the second year, students participate in an Innovation Week residency. A management simulation serves as a continuing, evolving case in which course participants working in teams assume the role of CEO, developing and executing business strategy and plans, building their business, executing true-to-life new venture creation decisions, and competing with other students in a virtual business world. Students stay at a hotel on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.
International Residency
In their final residency, Bloch Executive MBA students visit one or more international business center(s) to gain an understanding of business practices, political realities, and social and cultural sensitivities created by the move toward marketplace globalization. This residency encourages students to work on a business issue relevant to their organizations while visiting an international location. During past residencies, students have met with an exceptional array of executives and leaders from global business and governmental industries and obtain an “insider’s view” of multi-national corporations. Past residencies have included Hong Kong, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Berlin and Shanghai.
