Bob Herman is professor in the Department of Public Affairs at the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration and Senior Fellow of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at UMKC. He helped to start the Institute’s emphasis in nonprofit management, one the first three academic nonprofit management programs established in the U.S. Herman teaches courses in the core M.P.A. program, in the nonprofit management emphasis, and Ph.D. seminars. He received a B.A. (economics) from Kansas State University, and both the M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University in organizational behavior.
Herman’s research interests have focused on studies of effective chief executive leadership in nonprofit organizations and on studies of nonprofit organizational effectiveness. His research has been funded by the University of Missouri and the Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, administered by the Aspen Institute. He is the author of more than 35 journal articles and book chapters as well as the author or editor of three books. Herman’s articles have appeared in several journals including Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Voluntas, American Review of Public Administration and Public Administration Review. He received UMKC’s N. T. Veatch Award for Distinguished Research and was awarded a UMKC Trustees' Faculty Fellowship in recognition of his research contributions.
Herman has been president of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action and a visiting professor at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa in 1997. Among many other speeches and workshops, during September 1999 he was an U.S. Information Agency Speaker and Specialist on nonprofit board governance in Argentina and addressed the National Youth Sector Conference, July 14, 2001 in Singapore and conducted a workshop on strategic management for nonprofit organizations for National Youth Council, July 16, 2001 in Singapore.
