Cornell is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University (Ph.D.), Eastern Kentucky University (MBA), and the University of Kentucky (B.S.A.). Cornell served as the Faculty Advisor of the Epsilon Delta Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi for 15 years, and received the National Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award in 1997. He practiced as a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand for three years and as a CMA with Jerrico, Inc., for three additional years prior to pursuing his academic career.
Cornell teaches financial accounting at both the graduate and undergraduate level. His research interests include financial accounting, education, and teaching issues. He has numerous publications in leading accounting, professional, and educational journals including Issues in Accounting Education, Advances in Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, The Ohio CPA Journal, Journal of Accounting and Finance Research, Journal of Small Business Management, Management Accounting, Internal Auditing, Journal of Applied Business Research, and Southwest Business Review. Cornell has made numerous professional and educational presentations in addition to these publications.
Cornell has received numerous teaching awards, including the MSCPA Outstanding Educator Award, The Elmer P. Pierson Faculty Teaching Award, and the Missouri Professor of the Year Award for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
