Curriculum Vitae (.pdf)

Carla Pavone is an assistant professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at the Bloch School at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Her research focuses on venture capital, strategic decision-making, organizational learning, and social enterprises.

Pavone holds a BA in biology from University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Her first career was in magazine and book publishing as well as data conversion, primary in start-up companies. Her second career was in financial services where she led internal start-ups and turnarounds for an American Express subsidiary.

She then entered academia and is completing a doctorate in strategy/entrepreneurship from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation, titled “Opportunity Re-Evaluation: How Evolving Risk Perceptions Influence Venture Capitalist Support of Portfolio Firms,” uses a five-year panel study to analyze why a venture capital firm may choose to exit some portfolio investments while increasing its financial commitment to other, apparently equally risky, companies.
