Faculty & Department NewsNick Peroff joined the Edgar Snow Delegation/KC Trade Delegation to Beijing, Shanghi and other major cities in China. He recently accompanied a group of Bloch School graduate students on a Study Abroad trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, and will lead a study abroad class to Shanghai in 2009. Joan Gallos named Curators' professor : Joan Gallos was recently named a University of Missouri Curators’ Teaching Professor of Leadership by the UM Board of Curators. At the recommendation of President Gary Forsee and after review at the campus and system levels, the Board confirmed the appointment in September. This is the first Curators’ appointment for UMKC since 2005 and the first for the Bloch School.A Curators’ Professorship is the highest academic rank awarded by the UM System to a select few scholars with extraordinary records of professional accomplishment. Dr. Nick Peroff has been featured in the latest issue of the Bloch Faculty Focus. Dr. David Renz has been awarded one of eight new Faculty Fellowships for the Students in the City. This program, through UMKC's Center for the City, furthers the progress of urban core revitalization by catalyzing ever-increasing experiential education opportunities for UMKC students. Dr. David Renz has also been recognized by the Kansas City Society of Association Executives with the Distinguished Community Leadership Award for 2004. Double congratulations, Dave! Dr. Bob Herman published "Readers' Perceptions of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Management Journals" with co-author Jeffrey Brudney of the University of Georgia, in the September 2004 issue of the American Review of Public Administration. Dr. Nick Peroff has been appointed to serve as a member of the Haskell Indian Nations University Tribal Archives and Records Management Advisory Board at the American Indian Records Repository in Lenexa. Dr. Bob Herman was presented with the Academic Public Administrator of the Year award by the Greater Kansas City chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) at its recent 2004 annual awards luncheon. Congratulations, Bob! Cookingham Institute Receives HUD Grant The Cookingham Institute has been awarded a $90,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant provides full tuition for three minority students pursuing Master's degrees in Public Administration. The Regional Chapter of ASPA and MARC have confirmed the first annual conference in a series on the future of local government — "Facing the Future: Local Government Financing." It is scheduled for March 30 and will feature David Osborne, author of The Price of Government. Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness Paper Published The Cookingham Institute and the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership, in a joint effort, published and distributed the occasional paper "Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness: Practical Implications of Research on an Elusive Concept", by Robert D. Herman and David O. Renz. This is a practitioner-oriented report that is the result of research conducted by Herman and Renz over the past ten years. It was funded by the Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, which also covered the printing and mailing expenses to distribute copies of the report to 5000 nonprofit leaders across the country. The paper is available in PDF format. Hard copies are also available in the Cookingham Institute office as well as both offices of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership.
