Community Economic Development Certificate

The Cookingham Institute of Urban Affairs offers a Certificate in Community Economic Development. This program includes two one-hour credit courses on the planning context and finance tools/techniques, and one two hour credit course on application methods. Upon completion of all three courses, the attendees will be awarded a Certificate in Community Economic Development. The intent of this series is to familiarize attendees with a structured, reliable process of community economic development, emphasizing urban redevelopment. Most particularly, the Certificate Program provides exposure to revitalization techniques and the opportunity to explore application methods through active simulation exercises and community changing reinvestment approaches.

PA 565A: The Planning Context explores the urban planning process, urban development approaches, and professional planning roles and culture.

  • Session 1: Idea/Passion, purpose for the project

  • Session 2: Community Factor, what effect does it have on the community

  • Session 3: Feasibility study
    February 19th, 2008

PA 565B: Tools and Techniques focuses on the environment of community economic development, legal and financial tools, and the opportunities and pitfalls of deal structuring.

  • Session 1: Real Estate, Land, Building
    February 26th, 2008 
  • Session 2: Accounting and Financing,TIF, Tax Credits
    March 11th, 2008
  • Session 3: Project Management Team & Scheduling
    March 18th, 2008

PA 565C: Effective Implementation includes a review, simulation exercises, and assessment methods, along with a recap of the planning framework, public, private and not for profit perspectives on development.

 Course Times and Location:
Courses run from 8:30-12:00pm for community members and 8:30-2:30pm for graduate students. All classes will be held at UMKC's Bloch School of Business and Public Administration (5110 Cherry Street, KCMO) in Room 101.
