Study International Business and travel to London, England!
Faculty:
Dr. Fred Hays, Carl W. Allendoerfer Professor of Banking and Finance and Director of Bloch School Study Abroad Programs, is leading the trip to London for the 16th year. Contact Dr. Hays at: haysf@umkc.edu .
Dr. Nancy Day, Associate Professor, Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, is scheduled to accompany the class during the trip. She is assisting with this course for the third year. Contact Dr. Day at: dayn@umkc.edu .
Course Scheduling:
The course will meet on the UMKC campus during February, March and April, 2010. The one week international residency takes place in May 2010.
Possible activities in London:
- Business and political visits to international and local companies such as Cerner, HOK, Lloyd's of London, McGraw-Hill, and the British Parliament.
- Cultural visits to sites such as the Royal Observatory at Greenwich and the Imperial War Museum.
- Free time for personal exploration of historic sites and famous attractions, public lectures, theatre, nightlife and other activities. In your free time you may wish to visit the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, Soho, Madame Tussaud's, Hyde Park and many other famous sites. Enjoy a walking tour of the Beatles sites or perhaps a "Jack the Ripper" tour. Join us for a pub crawl of some of the most famous pubs in British history.
Optional excursion:
Students are invited to participate in an optional sightseeing excursion to the "City of Lights", the incomparable Paris, from May 12th-14th prior to the beginning of the London program. This trip includes the opportunity to visit Parisian sites such as Notre Dame, the Louvre and the d'Orsay museums, Versailles, the Invalides, Sacre Coeur, the Arche de Triumphe and many other attractions. Enjoy a boat ride on the Seine, stroll along the Left Bank and perhaps have lunch under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
An administrative fee of $100 is charged for participation in the pre-trip. Students are responsible for their transportation costs, accommodation expense, meals and entrance fees. Payment for some of the expenses may be collected in the spring to ensure availability of rooms, etc.
Costs:
Students are responsible for the following program costs:
- $500 deposit* to be submitted with the program application. The deposit, less $100, is refundable until accommodations must be finalized (by January 31st). If an application is rejected, the entire deposit will be refunded. This deposit is a down payment toward accommodations.
- 3 hours tuition.
- International airfare to/from London.
- Meals in London
- Local transportation costs.
- Miscellaneous expenses including entry fees to cultural sites.
- Incidentals.
- Passport costs, if you do not have a passport already.
- University required HTH Health Insurance.
*Due to unpredictable price increases and currency fluctuations, students may be required to pay additional funds prior to the trip.
